Busting Out!
Busting Out! Performance for Breast Cancer Research – at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Adelaide, for a limited season from March 18, 2009
A special performance of the sell-out comedy stage show, starring Australian actors Emma Powell and Bev Killick, Busting Out! will be held on 25 March to raise funds for breast cancer research and care at Flinders Medical Centre. One hundred thousand Australians have already taken this show under their collective bosom and flocked in droves to see Busting Out! - It’s a performance that reinvents how we look at breasts and kooks at notions of what breasts are for, what they can do and discovers that there is far more to the humble boob than previously imagined. On the evening of March 25, Her Majesty’s Theatre will open its iconic doors for a special fundraiser performance of Busting Out! And, $20 from each ticket sold will go to the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation for breast cancer research and care.
“With Busting Out!, I was keen to create an experience where women (and men) of all different shapes and sizes could celebrate their own bodies. As an adolescent, I was often teased about my large breasts. However any issues I have faced, pale into insignificance against those of all the brave women out there who have fought and are still fighting this horrible disease. Bev and I are delighted to be working with Adelaide’s Flinders Medical Centre Foundation, to do all we can to help raise awareness and funds for research and care”, said show creator, Emma Powell.
Breast cancer has become one of the highest diagnosed cancers worldwide. In Australia over 11,000 women develop this disease each year and sadly over 2,000 women die. Flinders Medical Centre is responsible for the care of many South Australians who are diagnosed with breast cancer. “This is a special show to celebrate the incredible strength, beauty and resilience of women. It’s one night you can forget about your own breasts while Bev and Emma take you on a journey of celebration, adventure and fun, a journey to help women realise it doesn’t matter what a breast looks like, rather who the owner is,” said Deborah Heithersay, General Manager of the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation.
Currently. medical scientists at Flinders are leading the way in:
• Ground-breaking research into the link between tiny by-products of genes called microRNAs and the development of breast cancers,
• Work on a pre-screening laboratory test that will improve screening for hereditary breast cancers,
• World-class investigations into Lymphoedema to improve outcomes for women after surgery,
• Investigations into the possible healing qualities of a natural anti-cancer agent produced by a common sea snail on breast cancer cell lines.
The Flinders Medical Centre Foundation is the official charitable organisation of the Flinders Medical Centre and raises money for the hospital and research to improve the quality of life for present and future generations.
Busting Out! will perform at Her Majesty’s Theatre for a limited season from March 18, 2009.
