Legacy of the Tiger Mother…

Legacy of the Tiger Mother …  A musical look at modern Chinese-American parenting

Legacy of the Tiger Mother is the debut musical by Las Vegas writing team Angela Chan and Michael Manley. The show premiered at New York’s Times Square International Theatre Festival last month after a sell-out season in Las Vegas in December 2011. East meets west in this funny, irreverent and moving story about a mother, a daughter, a piano, and tough love, Asian style. Legacy of the Tiger Mother will have its Australian premiere season from March 4-10, at 7.30pm at the Adelaide Town Hall – David Spence Room, as part as part of the Holden Street Theatres 2012 Fringe Program.

Co-creator Angela Chan, a third generation Chinese-American and professional pianist (she has performed in The Producers, Spamalot, Mamma Mia, The Lion King, with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and currently performs in Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular, Jersey Boys, and KA by Cirque du Soleil) said, ‘Few musical theatre works engage the modern Asian immigrant experience. I wanted to create a piece that was inspired by my own childhood and spoke directly to a multi-cultural audience, since we’ve been under-represented in musical theatre, except for period works such as ‘South Pacific’ and ‘Miss Saigon.’ Deemed ‘smart, subtle, and funny’ by Vegas SEVEN Magazine and named one of the top five theatre shows of 2011 by Las Vegas Weekly, Legacy of the Tiger Mother is the musical journey of Lily, a first generation Chinese immigrant, and her daughter Mei.

Like many Chinese, Mei and Lily consider the piano the gateway to success, with perfection and the ‘First Prize’ being the ultimate goals. But at Mei’s daughter Kim’s piano recital, Mei clashes with Lily over how much is too much when it comes to parenting. Mei must decide for herself; what is the perfect balance of mixing the old with the new and still meet her mother’s approval. The Australian premiere will feature Yen Yen Stender as Mei and Chiew-Jin Khut, as Lily and is directed by Lysander Abadia with musical direction by Angela Chan.
