China, France: “Ties back on right track”

“Chinese-French relations, which have witnessed setbacks in recent years, are again on the right track as shown by French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s state visit to China. President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao all met with Sarkozy, who arrived in China for a three-day visit. Leaders of the two countries exchanged views on improving the China-France all-round strategic partnership as well as international and regional issues of mutual concern. Sarkozy also traveled to Shanghai to attend the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Expo. The French president’s high-profile visit to China is a remarkable event on warming and improving bilateral ties, which were spoiled by Sarkozy’s meeting with the Dalai Lama in December 2008″

“The Dalai Lama urged Tibetans not to celebrate Losar, the Tibetan New Year, just days before his planned meeting with US President Barack Obama which has infuriated China. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, who greeted thousands of Tibetans in the main Buddhist temple in the north Indian town of Dharamsala at the start of what would otherwise be a two-week Losar celebration, said the gesture was to honor those in Tibet”

“China warns US on Dalai Lama”

“US President Barack Obama still plans to meet the Dalai Lama, the White House said on Tuesday, despite China’s warning that such a meeting would hurt ties already strained by U.S. weapons sales to Taiwan. Digging in on two points of discord, China vowed to impose unspecified sanctions against U.S. companies selling arms to Taiwan and said any meeting between Obama and the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader would hurt bilateral ties. The White House shrugged off Beijing’s warning. ’The president told China’s leaders during his trip last year that he would meet with the Dalai Lama and he intends to do so,’ White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters traveling with Obama to New Hampshire”

“China plans to fast track development of Tibet to enhance security in the poor mountainous region racked with chronic ethnic tensions that turned deadly in 2008, official media said. The government seeks ‘leap-frog’ development of Tibet by raising infrastructure quality and agricultural incomes to national levels by 2020, Xinhua news agency said, citing comments from senior Chinese leaders at a meeting earlier in the week. Violent demonstrations in the Tibetan capital Lhasa that left at least 19 dead on March 14, 2008 heightened government awareness of the economic roots of unrest, although officials blamed protest activity across the plateau on separatists loyal to exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama”

“China needs no lessons about its Internet from the United States, the head of an online media association said through official media on Saturday after the United States rapped Beijing over information freedom. A speech by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday showed a lack of respect for China, which cannot accept conditions on matters of ‘national security’ or ‘social stability,’ said Beijing Association of Online Media Chairman Min Dahong. The Internet has joined trade imbalances, currency values,US weapons sales to Taiwan and tensions over human rights and Tibet among the quarrels straining ties between the world’s biggest and third-biggest economies”
