“The German chancellor Angela Merkel was hoping for a clear victory in the presidential contest after being hit by a popular backlash over bailouts of Greece and the euro zone that have presented German taxpayers will a bill of over £100 billion. But despite a government majority of 21 votes in a specially convened Federal Convention of 1,244 MPs and regional representatives, Christian Wulff, the Chancellor’s choice, failed to win in two rounds of voting. The setback caused German shares to tumble and has fuelled fears of political instability in Europe’s largest economy. Mr Wulff’s failure meant that he was expected to be elected as Germany’s new President as a third round choice, on the basis of winning the largest number of votes rather than the usual level of clear majority support. Only two of 13 German presidential elections since 1949 have gone to a third round, the last time in 1994 with the election of Roman Herzog as a unified Germany’s first president since Adolf Hitler. Mrs Merkel’s choice came close to being unseated by Joachim Gauck, 70, a Protestant pastor and anti-Communist activist under East Germany’s former dictatorship, who was nominated by the opposition and became a popular challenger”
